Meet Kiana Kohr, MHC-LP
Kiana is supervised by Caroline Kirby, LMFT, NY #001920
Hi! I’m Kiana (she/her), a Mental Health Counselor. I’m glad you’re here!
Kiana is a New York City–based therapist who works from a person-centered, relational lens. Her practice is rooted in the belief that healing happens in connection and that every client deserves a space built on empathy, authenticity, and respect for their autonomy. Kiana takes a strengths-based approach, helping clients better understand themselves while honoring the identities, relationships, and systems that shape their lived experience.
She is sex-positive and LGBTQIA+ affirming, and she works from a social justice–oriented perspective that emphasizes cultural humility and creating a safe, affirming space for individuals from historically marginalized communities. Kiana believes therapy should feel collaborative, emotionally safe, and a place where clients can explore, grow, and move toward deeper self-understanding.
Therapeutic Approach
Kiana creates a warm, collaborative therapeutic environment where clients feel empowered to show up as their full selves. She prioritizes emotional safety and mutual respect, meeting clients where they are while gently supporting insight and growth.
Her approach is person-centered and relational, integrating Adlerian and relational–cultural perspectives to explore how early experiences, family dynamics, and systemic contexts shape identity and present-day functioning. Kiana is trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Polyvagal-informed work. She pulls from these modalities while tailoring treatment to each client’s unique needs.
She works from a trauma-focused lens and has experience counseling individuals, families, couples, and children. Kiana emphasizes collaboration, helping clients develop practical tools while also deepening emotional awareness and connection.
Specialties & Interests
Kiana specializes in working with young and middle-aged adults in NYC navigating identity development, life transitions, and relational challenges. Much of her work centers on helping clients process family-of-origin dynamics, including divorce, intergenerational patterns, and relational trauma. She works with trauma survivors, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and people from historically marginalized communities, creating an affirming and emotionally safe space for exploration and healing. Kiana approaches therapy through a trauma-informed and culturally responsive lens, supporting clients as they untangle longstanding patterns, build healthier relationships, and develop a stronger, more authentic sense of self.
Education & Credentials
Kiana holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Human Development from Penn State. She went on to earn her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Southern New Hampshire University.
During her graduate training, Kiana focused on trauma-informed care and counseling families, couples, and children. She is currently practicing under the supervision of Caroline Kirby, LMFT (License #001920), as she completes post-graduate clinical hours toward full licensure.
Kiana is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), reflecting her commitment to professional ethics and continued development in the mental health field.
Professional Development
Kiana is committed to ongoing growth and learning through supervision, workshops, webinars, professional literature, and peer consultation. She regularly engages in continuing education to deepen her clinical skills and ensure she is providing thoughtful, up-to-date care to her clients.
Her Inspiration to Become a Therapist
Kiana has always felt drawn to helping others and offering love and respect in ways that feel authentic and deeply human. In high school, she took her first psychology class and immediately fell in love with understanding the “why” behind our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. That early curiosity grew into a passion, leading her to pursue psychology in college and eventually a career in counseling.
She believes deeply in the power of being seen, heard, and valued. That belief is at the heart of her work. Kiana feels honored by the privilege of walking alongside clients as they move toward connection, growth, and a stronger sense of self. She finds the collaborative nature of therapy incredibly meaningful. Learning about herself and deepening her work as a clinician, while holding space and trust for others is one of the most rewarding aspects of what she does.
Her hope is that every client can recognize their inherent worth. Being trusted with someone’s story and witnessing the deep healing work that unfolds is something she describes as powerful, rewarding, and truly astounding.
When Kiana Isn’t Working
Outside of session, Kiana is a proud mother to her two cats, Phoebe and Wednesday. She loves music of all kinds: from R&B throwbacks to female-empowering pop anthems. She can often be found kayaking on the Hudson when the weather is right.
A self-proclaimed foodie, Kiana loves experimenting in the kitchen. As a social butterfly, she prioritizes girls’ nights and meaningful social gatherings. And when she’s staying in, you’ll likely find her curled up on the couch watching Bridgerton, Stranger Things, or Selling Sunset.
